Apparently only works on newer stock of heavy fruiting mini trees

What about the rest of the crops?

Many well read, intelligent experts warned of this as far back as Summer 2016. It really is quite worrying in the event of a No-Deal Brexit.
Pity you only quote from one paper that is extremely left wing. Better to quote from other papers or sources to get a more balanced opinion first

You sound like IBM "There will be a worldwide market for about 5 computers" or Bill Gates "Nobody needs more than 640KB of memory" or more likely Ned Ludd.

What crops? Over here most "highstem" races of apple and pears went out of fashion 50 years ago. To further efficiency in plucking fruit, only lowstem races were kept, where you could walk & stand beside the trees.
Only now conservationists are trying desperately to save the last remaining orchards, that mostly have no more than 10-20 trees.

Re: Fears come to fruition

I suppose it's too simple to suggest that people on the dole, people that have been in court and sentenced to so-many hours of unpaid work, and even some prisoners, could perhaps be made to do some of these jobs?

Why rely on just foreign labour?

If ever the idea got around that working in orchards were criminals, nobody would want to be seen working there, for fear of being regarded a criminal by neighboy rs, famiky etc. Not in a million years for a million pounds.

Why don’t you provide the right wing counter story is there is such a thing

Not so, there is plenty on mechanisation available but even farmers are saying that it will never replace all manual picking

Investment costs are prohibiting for smaller and diverse crop farms

Just as automation has been available in manufacturing industry for a long time it is still not replacing manual workers in many companies

The USA has farm labour shortages and is at the forefront of automation but it is accepted that it is not suitable for every crop of circumstance
