I can't find the essential answer to ... who branded the NHM sexist.

I think it was Proceedings B

'Proceedings B is the Royal Society's flagship biological research journal, accepting original articles and reviews of outstanding scientific importance'

I Don't know who came up with the study itself though.

I Don't know who came up with the study itself though.
I believe it is the usual cretinous people who feel they have to justify their seven-figure salaries. They probably felt the need to let the public know they actually exist in case they lost their public funds. Par for the course.
