Pruning Olive Tree

I have a small olive tree growing very straggly - it tends to loose its leaves in the winter and then grows new growth only at the top of each branch. It is only approx. 3 feet tall at the moment and I wondered if I shortened the branches if it would be o.k. It is in the conservatory all year round.

Re: Pruning Olive Tree

Hi Zinnia, I also have an Olive tree but I keep it outside. I don't pretend to be knowledgeable about pruning these trees in particular but I prune away any dead wood and slightly shorten any new growth. I never have had any fruit nor do I expect to do so considering our climate but the tree seems healthy enough. Perhaps you could find out more on the internet.

Re: Pruning Olive Tree

Thank you Alan for your suggestions. Can I ask you if your tree is in the ground or a pot?

Regards - Zinnia

Re: Pruning Olive Tree

It's in a pot Zinnia. I suppose I could always move it into my greenhouse in winter........I never thought of that!
