Didn't think I would feel so happy about it-but after paying it for years it does seem like a weight has been lifted.

Am thinking of treating myself to a really good pair of walking boots and a really good waterproof jacket-just in case we don't have a 'barbeque winter'

Re: Oh happy day.....

Bought my house in 1967 and paid £29 a month, my wage was £18 a week(bribed some one in the pay office to say I earned £30 a week)

Paid off in 1992 and it had gone up to £40 a month, to be fair never noticed any differance, never felt any richer.

By the By left £1 still to be paid off, so the Building Soc keeps and looks after the deeds, I would lose them other wise

Re: Oh happy day.....

You've probably all seen pics of my house on the forum, . . it's a four apartment, we bought it in the late seventies, . . it was an ex council house built in 1938, solid as a rock, no plasterboards and the like, . . would you believe it only cost us £9,500 . . that's the only decent thing the tories did for us when they gave us the right to own our own home, . . Maggie, . . I take back everything I've said about you my dear.

Re: Oh happy day.....

The inflation of the late 70s did marvels for real estate here. I bought my house for $21,000, 20 year mortgage. Payments were $144.48 P & I. So, as salaries went up the payment remained the same; made out like a bandit!
