Re: The importance of getting married

We can thank celebs for the devaluation of marriage.
It's just a fashion accessory for most of them and it's more about the ceremony and dress than the actual definition and commitment.

Allowing ceremonies to take place in stupid places also devalues the meaning of betrothal....

Marriage has been around for hundreds if not thousands of years and now it joins some of the other 21st century things, such as same sex marriage, that are eroding away the fabric of society.

I am so glad I live in the 21st century where gay marriage is permitted, there is nothing wrong with being gay and living in a married relationship with your partner.

In the bad old days, men were regarded as head of a household and women supposedly subservient to them! I realise that this still happens in some cultures, it is WRONG, women and men are equal.

I didn't say there was anything wrong with being gay Tara, but civil partnerships are intended for gay unions, with all the legal stuff that marriage gives a hetrosexual couple. Just another nail in the coffin of proper family life and the destruction of the fabric of society.

A lot of heterosexual couples prefer a civil partnership too, far easier to shed if it all goes wrong. No one should stay in a bad marriage, especially not for the sake of the children, far better to go their separate ways.

Re: The importance of getting married

These ridiculous parodies of proper marriage by couples in abnormal relationships have served to devalue proper marriage between a man and woman.

Note - I use the word abnormal meaning that which the majority of people do not engage in.

Absolute junk AT. Is it necessary to say this twice in one thread?

It's a matter of opinion and a matter of values. This is one of the things that I hold strong views on.

I couldn't care much less what people do in the privacy of their own homes or communities made up of others with the same - call it what you will - but I object most strongly when confronted with people claiming that it is equal to normal sexuality.

It is not.

I also believe that presenting a formal legally binding contract to such relationships as being equivalent to Marriage is wrong.

It is a parody of real marriage and devalues and undermines the meaning and value of marriage.

I think we may have differing views on what "marriage" means these days AT. Personally I see nothing wrong in a couple of the same sex wanting to commit formally and openly to each other.

I absolutely agree.

But it's not marriage. Calling it marriage devalues the real thing, it doesn't add some sort of value to formal and more importantly legal arrangements, instead it brings real marriage down to the same level. the
