It appears they can be brown or bright green .... and they are not poisonous and harmless to people and pets.

Thanks Donkeyman. After googling many pictures now, I think I have decided it was an Elephant Hawkmoth I saw.

It was not only the size that shocked me, it was the speed it travelled too, amazing.

Glad I saw it though, I may never see one again.
