I agree. I ignore all the recent trendy 'acceptable' list of words. I speak and write as I have always done - with a few necessary exceptions that I think would be dangerous if I used them freely.

For example, an expression I have always used, "the N... in the woodpile", which was something we always said without even considering any reference to one particular section of society, is now something I have to be very careful not to use unthinkingly because if the 'wrong' person heard it I could potentially be arrested by the police.

Other words, as mentioned, such as 'man' and 'woman', I will continue to use freely as objections to their use are absolutely ridiculous and pathetic.

May I correct that statement for you please, Muddy?

"When my house catches fire I want some strong, sexy bloke to rescue me..."

Having said that, to be perfectly correct, I realise that there are some ladies who would prefer an attractive girl to rescue them. Perhaps best not to go there as it may be offensive to certain people.

Re: Freedom of Speech

Coincidentally, I have just seen a 'warning message' on the Talking Pictures TV channel:

"Scotland Yard was made between 1952 and 1961 and contains some offensive and discriminatory language which reflects the prevailing attitudes of the time."

Really! Should things like that be necessary?

Perhaps the Oxford University Bodleian Library should go through every one of their historical tomes and insert a warning text wherever necessary stating that:
"This book was printed between 1352 and 1361 (dates as appropriate) and contains some offensive and discriminatory language which reflects the prevailing attitudes of the time."

After all, if anyone is going to be offended it will be the young snowflake students who have been successfully brainwashed to object against anything not politically accredited by their supervising lefty academics.

Re: Freedom of Speech

The Left are attacking freedom of speech. They must be resisted.

Since Douglas Murray wrote his book on immigration 18 months ago, I've not seen or heard of him on radio or TV. It's as if he is now banned. Meanwhile the same old knuckleheads (and new ones) pop up all over the place every other day.

Nice thought, Roxy - but I can't see it happening in our lifetime.

Exactly JBR.
