4 risky places to swipe your debit card

Found this of interest. Outdoor ATMs, gas stations, online and restaurants are the highest risk.

Re: 4 risky places to swipe your debit card

A couple of years ago I nipped to Aldi on my way home from work for my weekly shop, put my card into the machine and there was a serious occurrence.

I was told that my card was not being accepted even though I did have money in the bank. Anyway, the Staff called Barclays and, from a phone which was brought to the the cash point I was able to talk to somebody from Barclays.

This was unbelievable. I was asked several questions to verify who I was which I answered satisfactorily. I was told that my debit card had been stopped because of a transaction that somebody had tried to make for $98 in the USA to a company called Chaadi in Mumbai!

I explained to the person that I never carry cash on me so they allowed my purchase from Aldi to take place, but after that I couldn't use my card any longer until a new one had been issued.

This was on a Friday so I asked the Barclays person to allow me half an hour to get to an ATM so that I could withdraw some cash for the weekend, which he did, but my new card would be one week before I received it.

I explained all of this to my boss on the Monday at work and he lent me some cash until my card came through.

I have since found out that some machines are tampered with at manufacture and that they can read card details, most especially if the card isn't pushed into the machine properly, so make sure you push your card right into the machine before entering your pin number.

When I finally got home, I looked up Chaadi on the internet, and it's a porn site!

Luckily for me, Barclays were on it within seconds of the transaction and stopped it immediately. Beware folks.

Seems pretty logical that those are the riskiest, really.

I'm with Capital One and so far they seem to be pretty on the ball spotting anything suspicious, and they ring me to check transactions then.Although most times the transactions have been legit, they did identify one duff one which led to my card having to be replaced. I'd rather that than lots of fraud though!

Re: 4 risky places to swipe your debit card

About a year ago, I got a call from my bank..I refused to answer any questions and went to the bank in person. I am very careful where I use my card and get cash back from the bigger grocery stores, so that I don't use the ATM machines.
Apparently my card too was being used in America!
The bank were very good, and we went through all my transactions to see if I had used my card insecurely.
We couldn't find a thing......apart from various petrol stations.
I got a new card and pin within days.

Re: 4 risky places to swipe your debit card

I've recently had 2 suspicious emails. One supposedly from the cable company said I needed to click on a web link and verify my personal info to "keep the account active" and the other was asking me to click to verify a purchase using a debit card from a bank I've never dealt with.

I checked the cable company website and sure enough they had a notice posted advising that they never contact customers by email or ask for personal info and to be wary of any such emails.

I called the bank re the second one and they had been getting calls all day from people questioning similar emails. All bogus.

Re: 4 risky places to swipe your debit card

People have to be so careful these days. I never get spam on my home computer, but I do get junk email at work.

I keep getting emails from NYPD about a traffic violation I've committed , confirmations of airline bookings also from America, emails telling me to collect my parcels from an American location, all of which luckily AVG intercepts and puts them straight into the virus vault.

I've also had emails from E-Bay saying that if I don't "click here" to bring my details up to date, my membership will be cancelled. I've never signed up for anything on E-Bay - the list goes on.

The simple solution is, if you don't know the sender, add it to your junk email system.

Not just if you don't know the sender, though. I had two suspicious emails two days ago from a friend. Obviously not genuine because the subject was "see this" with no text only advice to click to see a photo. Which I didn't, but sent them both to spam. She had a hotmail account which had been hacked, so just a word of warning if anyone else experiences the same.
