Your first foreign currency exchange.

Ours was way back in 1982. We were going on our first holiday abroad to Italy.

We got 2,200 Italian Lira to the pound.

That caused some confusion until we got used to it.

If you went in a supermarket & only needed a very small amount of change they would throw a sweet on the conveyor belt...

Do you remember your first foreign currency exchange?

I guess it must have been Portuguese Escudos, back in the early '70s. And I've just bought some Euros to spend in Portugal next week.

Re: Your first foreign currency exchange.

I used to exchange our dollars for German marks in 1968-1970.
At that time the exchange rate was about 4 marks to 1 US dollar.

Not so today..... 1.68 marks to 1.00 dollar

big difference

My first holiday abroad was to Ibiza in 1987. I believe I didn't take any currency but used traveller's cheques instead, and I believe they still do this form of money exchange these days.
I've always changed my sterling into cash since though.

Mine was Lira in about 1978 when we went Skiing with the school. I can't remember the exchange rate but I know I only had about £20.00 worth. By the end of the week I was asked out by an Italian girl but I had no money left.

The shops sometimes gave us stamps as change rather than coins.
