Beatles guitar valued at £400,000 on Antiques Roadshow

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-englan...yside-51698031

The prototype fretless guitar, made in the 1960s, appeared in Sunday's show.

Its current owner recorded sessions for a film company co-founded by Harrison, who asked him to play the guitar.

"I played a few notes and he said: 'Yeah, you're definitely getting more out of it than I am. It's doing better for you, why don't you have it'."

Bartell's of California made the instrument, which the owner, Ray, described as "a strange old thing to play".

A photograph in the episode shows the guitar among Harrison's collection.
I shall be watching the episode later .....

Hmm..as a guitarist myself I would say he can have it. Fretless electric bass yes. Great instrument but not a guitar. Gimme my old Strat any day.

Having seen and heard the guitar, I can see why the type never caught on - it's challenging to play without frets, since it always seems to be slightly out of tune.

The guitar was initially given to John Lennon and a similar one was given to Jimi Hendrix by Bartell. Lennon's ended up with Harrison but where's the other one .....

Here's a modern take on the idea:

I'd always prefer my 30 year old Epiphone or my classical guitar to play around on. Whether or not I'd like playing the auctioned guitar wouldn't matter too much though. I wish I'd been the lucky owner of it.

Edit: I lost a decade. My Epiphone is 40+ years old. Blimey!

I can tell you'd be a good guitarist keezoy. I might have been thought OK once but it's quite a long time since I played my guitars to any great degree. They are still hanging around and I might pick one of them up once in a while.

I thought that guitar on the Roadshow made some very interesting but equally strange noises - almost as if it had been linked to a synthesiser.

I wondered if George Harrison used it on Revolver.
