How did you manage that? My shirts and other items of clothing look terrible when they emerge from the washing machine. Hanging them up to dry doesn't improve this one bit either, only ironing them really does the trick.

Weigh up the costs. Continue to use DI or use boiled tap water and be prepared to replace the iron every few years.

Don't overlook the 'throwaway society' you will be joining if the latter course is taken. Distilled or de-ionised water causes no problem, having an old iron to dispose of does, as I found out when mine packed in last time. Nobody wants them, not even the charities who repair 'broken' electrical items and donate them to those who need them – they are not easy to repair.
