Odd one... but perhaps they don't like or want to be with the people or person at the table but have no option but to eat with them

My ex-brother in law used to gobble his meal,leave the table before every one had finished for a cigarette and came back stinking of tobacco.Glad he's now a rude ex.

In my house people ask permission to leave the table for whatever the reason , it is only polite to the cook or host .

I have to smile when taking my grandchildren on a picnic and sitting on the floor on a rug they ask to leave the table

Malcolm - because I've known this person for quite a few years and the same thing always happens.
Don't expect them to say "can I leave the table" like a 4 year old, but a genial, "going to sit in a comfy chair, is that ok" would at least be polite
