I'm not a meat eater but I've been told that unsmoked bacon works well in a croque monsieur too.

I have made a dried salmon flakes version
It was delish

And a croque madame without the ham
Scrummy too

For me it has to be a white bloomer loaf
They are VERY filling though

Tabby, your video post had some yummy looking sandwiches. Don't pay any attention to those old stick-in-the-muds. They probably eat right out of a can.
