Looks to me like loads of kids have everything they squawk for rather than otherwise .
There is a different definition of poverty today .

the French pay only marginally more income tax than we do. Yet France's infrastructure seems to be very efficiently run (at least on my visits it seems so). They also have a super national health service. What are they doing differently?

Hi

We get what we pay for, nothing more, nothing less.

Germany is the biggest contributor to the EU, far more than we pay.

Germany, in spite of this, has a much higher standard of living than we do.

It also has a huge Budget Surplus, the biggest ever this year.

The UK on the other hand is paying £42 Billion a year in interest payments to fund our lifestyles.

That is 5 times our nett payment to the EU.

We cannot blame the EU for this financial mismanagement, it is simply down to our Politicians.

I cannot wait until we leave, no more excuses, our Politicians will be shown for what they are, useless.

You're right I hadn't taken account of the social security contribution because it's not shown in the income tax rates. Theirs is more than double ours and that's presumably part of the reason why they have better pensions and healthcare.

Although I see from reports that Macron is planning to scale down their controversial "wealth tax" which does seem draconian as it would take account of asset costs at a far lower level than was proposed here (mansion tax) as well as assets in foreign countries. Of course the richer you are the more the small percentages would apply so many millionaires have left.

I haven't looked at the other changes they made late last year but it's a hugely complex model compared to ours.

Ours is a more progressive model these days, with those on lower incomes being taxed less than ever before. In France they have a lower threshold and the tax applied is 14% (I believe). Then a 30% threshold kicks in.

There must be lots of employment for tax accountants in France.

You are so right. This could have been the UK with the right leadership and with the enthusiasm to to fully participate in the EU.

Let's face it Germany has had bad times in the past but it has come back bigger and stronger than ever. Saying a piece of equipment is German it the same as saying, "It's the best there is". It would be nice to think and in 30 or 40 years time that "Made in the UK" would convey the same meaning (remembering that is exactly what it did mean once). What are the chances?

We will never have the same mentality as Germany. They have a completely different culture. Britain is a contradictory nation. But from that comes more innovation than many other parts of the world. The trouble is innovation needs to be bottled and protected. We are good at letting someone else add value to our innovation.
