I have a Tom Tom from some 15 years ago and it's never let me down yet.

Re: Reliable Satnav

I have a Garmin Nuvi but it won't accept updates over the internet (don't ask me why!), so I may get a replacement at some point and would steer towards a Tom Tom. I have to fess up that the Garmin has sent me long way round on occasions, though has been pretty good at getting me to destinations.

I want one that lets me download software to change the 'car' on the display. I have a little plane on mine to reflect my love of flying. And the Garmin doesn't have a wide choice of voices, certainly not celebrities.

I have found a satnav invaluable for locating nearby petrol stations, or supermarkets, though. Anyone else used that facility?

Re: Reliable Satnav

We use a tom tom only time we get into trouble is user error because you have to still read the road and make some decisions yourself and not just follow slavishly.

I have managed perfectly well so far with just a Collins road map.

Travelled all over Britain.

Been using a Garmin Nuvi 52LM which was bought very recently. Great bit of kit. Godsend on any journey.

This costs £67 with lifetime map updates. My Tom Tom cost £300 and map updates are about £30 a time- bought some 12/15 years ago.
