Bolton restrictions tightened amid rise in cases

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-54072272

Tighter coronavirus restrictions have been introduced in Bolton after a rise in cases.

  • All hospitality venues will be limited to takeaway and must be closed to customers between 22:00 BST and 05:00 each day.
  • It will become illegal for people to socialise with those outside their own household in any setting, even outdoors.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said the town in Greater Manchester had "the highest case rate in the country."

Mr Hancock told the House of Commons on Tuesday: "Unfortunately, after improving for several weeks, we've seen a very significant rise in cases in Bolton. The rise in cases in Bolton is partly due to socialising by people in their 20s and 30s. We know this from contact tracing. And through our contact tracing system we've identified a number of pubs at which the virus has spread significantly."

He said there were 120 cases per 100,000 in Bolton, which had already been under stricter lockdown measures.
If it's the young causing the problem now what will the problem be like as young people travel all over the UK to get to "uni" and throw a few thousand parties .....

UK epidemic growing as R number goes above 1

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-54116939

Coronavirus infections have increased in recent weeks in the UK, according to new estimates.

The government's latest R number is between 1 and 1.2 which means the epidemic is growing.

And a study of thousands of people in England found cases doubling every seven to eight days, with a marked rise in the north and among young people.

Cases reduced dramatically in May and stayed low in June and July, but several large studies of the general population now suggest there has been a resurgence.

The REACT study of more than 150,000 volunteers in England found "accelerating transmission" at the end of August and start of September.

Levels of infection were rising across England but particularly in the north east, north west and Yorkshire.

And there were increases in positive cases in all age groups up to the age of 65, with highest rates of growth in 18-24 year olds.

Prof Paul Elliott, director of the study at Imperial College London, said there was evidence of "an epidemic in the community" and not the result of more people being tested.

Birmingham lockdown restrictions increased

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-englan...ngham-54117532

Households in Birmingham have been banned from mixing in new lockdown measures announced following a spike in coronavirus cases. The city now has the second highest rate of Covid-19 infection in England, behind Bolton. The measures also cover neighbouring Sandwell and Solihull, affecting more than 1.6 million people in total. The restrictions will begin on Tuesday, it was announced at a regional meeting of council leaders.

The rate of coronavirus infection in Birmingham on 7 September was 85.4 per 100,000 people, up from 32 in the previous week.
The "doubling" of figures is unsettling .....

The news report said that if uni students have an outbreak they will have to stay put. They won't be allowed to travel home.

Concerns over increase in COVID-19 cases in 43 care homes

https://news.sky.com/story/coronavir...homes-12070583
The government has sent a letter to care providers warning them to "take the necessary action to prevent and limit outbreaks". The letter, from Stuart Miller, director of adult social care delivery at the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC), said:

"You will know already that we are experiencing a rise in confirmed COVID-19 cases, across the UK population. I need to alert you to the first signs this rise is being reflected in care homes too. Over the past three days, Public Health England has reported an increase in notifications of COVID-19 cases in care homes. Testing data has also shown an increase in the number of positive results. "Currently, the infections are mainly affecting the workforce but clearly there is a risk the virus will spread to care home residents, or to other parts of the care sector.
The Sunday Times said Health Secretary Matt Hancock was told on Wednesday that outbreaks had been detected in 43 care homes.
The rate of coronavirus recorded through satellite tests, used in care homes, has quadrupled since the beginning of the month, the newspaper added.
