Re: COVID-19: 2,948 new cases on Monday

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-54108740

People in two counties are being asked to wear face masks in work, shops and crowded public spaces* in a bid to avoid another local Covid-19 lockdown.

Residents of Rhondda Cynon Taff and Merthyr Tydfil** have been asked by councils only to use public transport if "essential".

Merthyr Tydfil has the second highest coronavirus case rate in Wales - behind Caerphilly, already in lockdown (see previous post).
* Work and crowded public places, IMO, should always be included.

I see too many people taking masks out of bags/pockets then putting them on before entering a shop - after entering a shop and handling numerous items they exit the shop, take off the mask and return it to their bag/pocket - the process is repeated for the next shop - any infection collected by the mask (from the wearer or otherwise) is spread wherever the hands go .....

Approved advice for wearing a mask includes:
When wearing a face covering you should:
  • wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water for 20 seconds or use hand sanitiser before putting a face covering on
  • avoid taking it off and putting it back on a lot in quick succession (for example, when leaving and entering shops on a high street)

When removing a face covering:
  • wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water for 20 seconds or use hand sanitiser before removing
  • only handle the straps, ties or clips
  • wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water for 20 seconds or use hand sanitiser once removed

** Merthyr Tydfil is about 23 miles north of Cardiff and less from Caerphilly .....

Covid patients to get antibody treatment

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-54145596

A new treatment that uses laboratory-made antibodies is to be trialled on Covid-19 patients in UK hospitals. These monoclonal antibodies will be given to about 2,000 people as part of the UK Recovery Trial, which previously found that a cheap steroid called dexamethasone could save lives. The first patients will be given the new drugs in the coming weeks.
The antibodies immediately boost patients' immune response - that's very good news .....

That is very good news.
Seems to me, us oldies, the later we get it, if we are going to get it, the better for us, as more testing for different cures/treatments will be available. I obviously hope none of us do get Covid19, but it's a comforting thought.

Re: COVID-19: 2,948 new cases on Monday

Sadly, along with the general increase in daily cases, the the number of patients entering hospital daily is increasing, too - from 750 a day, at the beinning of the month, to 880 today .....

Also sadly:

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...d-isolate.html

Covid care homes cases QUADRUPLE in a month as it's revealed 4.5million vulnerable people may be asked to isolate at home again as Britain's virus crisis threatens to 'spiral out of control'.

PHE data suggests that Covid-19 cases are surging among the over-50s, as senior officials last night warned of 'worrying' signs for high-risk groups. Last week, infections apparently increased 92 per cent among those in their 50s, 72 per cent among those in their 60s, and 44 per cent among those in their 80s and older
Sad ..... and scary .....

The prospect of another 30,000 "excess" care home deaths over winter is appalling .....

Coronavirus: UK to test inhaled vaccines

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-54147607

Delivering doses directly to the lungs might give a better immune response than conventional jabs, UK researchers say. The Imperial College London team will use two frontrunners already in development - the Oxford one recently paused in trials and one from Imperial that entered human testing in June.

About 30 healthy volunteers will be given the vaccines as a mist or aerosol - in the same way asthma drugs are delivered with a nebuliser machine and a mask or mouthpiece.

Lead researcher Dr Chris Chiu said: "The current pandemic is caused by a respiratory virus which primarily infects people through the cells lining the nose, throat and lungs. These surfaces are specialised and produce a different immune response to the rest of the body. So it is critical we explore whether targeting the airways directly can provide an effective response compared to a vaccine injected into muscle."
Sounds like a good idea to me .....

Re: COVID-19: 2,948 new cases on Monday

New lockdown measures have come into force in part of the West Midlands after the number of coronavirus cases rose.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/world-54157983

People in Birmingham, Sandwell and Solihull are banned from meeting others who are not part of their household or support bubble in homes or gardens.

The restrictions affect about 1.6 million people and run alongside wider rules which came into force on Monday.
That will be difficult to enforce .....

I live near one but not in one. Nevertheless, we get our share of visitors to our historic and attractive small town - just last week three neighbouring bars and two restaurants, frequented by out-of-towners, were shut down owing to a coronavirus outbreak, resulting 16 new cases, among their customers ......
