COVID-19 Vaccine: 8,000 jumbo jets needed to deliver doses globally, says IATA

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-54067499

Shipping a coronavirus vaccine around the world will be the "largest transport challenge ever" according to the airline industry.

The equivalent of 8,000 Boeing 747s will be needed, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) has said.

There is no Covid-19 vaccine yet, but IATA is already working with airlines, airports, global health bodies and drug firms on a global airlift plan.

The distribution programme assumes only one dose per person is needed.

While airlines have been shifting their focus onto delivering cargo during the severe downturn in passenger flights, shipping vaccines is far more complex.

Not all planes are suitable for delivering vaccines as they need a typical temperature range of between 2 and 8C for transporting drugs. Some vaccines may require frozen temperatures which would exclude more aircraft.

IATA has urged governments to begin careful planning now to ensure they are fully prepared once vaccines are approved and available for distribution.*

Along with making sure they are handled and transported at controlled temperatures, security is another issue.
* I hope our government takes this advice .....

You may be an expert but I'm not .....

I have no idea how drugs of mass prevention are normally manufactured and shipped around the world but, in the example, the quantity is a minimum of 7,800,000,000 doses ( 1 per person) - of course, that may double, triple or quadruple .....

Well having lived in a third world country, l can tell that the
pharmaceutical industry has been dominated by large western
companies that maximise their profits, with the esult that poorer
cunries could never afford the prices being asked for these
sometimes life saving drugs, even the aids drugs were torally
out of reach? I remember it took years get the price reduced if
at all?? And caused high d eath rates in most third world countries
as a consequence !!
So a couple of poor countries,( lndia and south africa ) decided to
make their own vaccines by basically copying the western drugs?
Of course the western companies protested about this and took
lndia& SA t court prevent them doing this, however some time
later the court ruled it should be allowed on humanitarian grounds
as so many people were dying??
Anyway, the upshot of this was the birth of the generic drug industry
and the saving of millions poor peoples lives and the provision of
cheaper drugs all over the world today, even in uk!
So my take on the pharmaceutical industry is that it is vastly over
priced and has little interest in saving human lives, its purpose
is to make money! lots of it !!

Donkeyman! 👎🤔👎

From your figures Omah, you can calculate the money involved??

All your questions have answers here:

Coronavirus: Who would get the vaccine first?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-54027269

If or when scientists succeed in making a coronavirus vaccine, there won't be enough to go around.

Research labs and pharmaceutical companies are rewriting the rulebook on the time it takes to develop, test and manufacture an effective vaccine.

Unprecedented steps are being taken to ensure roll-out of the vaccine is global. But there are concerns that the race to get one will be won by the richest countries, at the expense of the most vulnerable.

So who will get it first, how much will it cost and, in a global crisis, how do we make sure nobody gets left behind?
