No Sound!

Since wrecking my headphones (dog pulled out the lead from its connector) I have no sound on my PC, either through the replacement headset or the speakers. I've looked at the settings, everything seems fine - but no sound at all... any suggestions?

You've probably checked this but... did you plug the new headset into the correct socket? I know I have plugged mine into the microphone one by accident on occasion!

Good point there Azz, on some PC's there are 3 mini sockets, they're coloured differently, one is for "line in" another is for "aux out" another is for "speaker or headphones out", just put the plug in any one until you hear a buzz or click from your speakers.

Re: No Sound!

I tried that. Got a split second of sound then gone again. I suppose if all else fails I will need to dig out the instructions.

Re: No Sound!

I don't know if this is sorted out yet but if the socket has been strained, the solder or print may have cracked where the socket fixes to the board. Or perhaps the contacts inside the socket have been stretched apart so that they don't make contact with the earphone plug.

The speakers usually work when the earphones are disconnected. The removal of the plug allows a couple of contacts to connect. These then pass the sound to the speakers. A pull on the lead could damage these contacts and cause no speaker sound.

A soldering job or a new socket might be needed to put things right.

I was!

I had two plugs and assumed they both went in the back of the computer... turns out that one goes into the other speaker... Then in a rare clean up of the house I found the instructions and narrowed it down to either the light green or light blue socket. It was, of course, the second one I tried.

All systems go now!

Re: No Sound!

Ah right. I thought the lead combinations had been tried. Sorry to be a bit scary by suggesting cracked print and strained sockets. It's just that I used to be a TV/video recorder/domestic electronics repairer and that's the sort of thing I sometimes came across .
