I think it’s respectful to take them off if they are dirty, not nice walking into a house with dirty shoes, that’s my take on it anyway.
Very much this.I can still hear my mother shouting now.
The dog, however, was free to spread muddy paws all over the place without a word of disapproval.

Tradition more than anything. Going barefoot is something that people in mourning do and so we try to avoid giving that impression. There's many practices about wearing shoes and even what material the shoes should be made from. Best is wear foot coverings unless mourning the death of a close family member. Better yet don't attend funerals!

Thank you, Todger. I learn something new everyday in here!

Re: Taking your shoes off.

I once was asked to remove my shoes when entering a Mosque. I refused. What happened when working for BT one of the jobs was to provide a telephone coinbox in the entranced to a Mosque. It was company policy to wear steel toe capped shoes for obvious reasons . A coinbox and a telepone on a backboard was not that light.

It was not until I said right no coinbox then and started to leave ,that was when they backed down
Cheeky buggers a few weeks earlier it was just a large normal house.

Yes perhaps you suspected I am both practical and thoughtful? Flip flops can easily fit into a handbag and can then be worn if you are a guest at someone's house with minimal fuss of them having to find their spare "guest" slippers. Also handy at the gym / swimming pool.

I take my shoes off if the householder wants me too, don't bother in my own home though, nor do I make others do it in my house.
I do draw the line at muddy boots though & when we, daughter & I went horse riding our boots came off in the porch. Never know what you might have trodden in at a stables.

Re: Taking your shoes off.

Its a common practice here. Polished timber floors are popular. Its not new. My grandparents insisted we take our shoes off on their timber floors. We have timber floors. We have thick socks with leather soles.
