Funnily enough I was wondering the same thing as someone in the next road has set one up entirely covering their front garden. I'm guessing you probably don't need permission. I would have admired it and asked whether it's complicated to put up.Perhaps you could slip him a note and a bottle of wine saying sorry about the misunderstanding but you were thinking of getting one yourself.

Oh dear! I hope you don't end up getting the blame if she knocks it down. Frankly I'd be terrified after such a confrontation. I hate any kind of neighbourly disharmony.
