999 police ? No you had your window open.

I see some police forces are going to refuse to investigate burglaries if you have left a door unlocked or the window open, just wondered what you all think about that.

Living in a first floor flat our windows are rarely closed but I think if I were on the ground floor I would be locking up before going out. I'd be rather upset if police refused to attend if I forgot though.

Re: 999 police ? No you had your window open.

I have big sash windows so shutting windows before I go out has become the norm. However I don't lock my door when I walk down my field and I suppose somebody could nip into the house then and steal.
I wonder if this is because all our emergency services are understaffed and overworked so need to find ways of reducing working hours.

The responsibility to secure the property is entirely yours.
If you leave anything open you are inviting trouble.

Having said that, I cannot believe the police will refuse to investigate.
Get mugged in the street.....sorry, it's your fault for going out.

Nah.

I think that's the reason twink but it's the principle I was wondering about, if you did as you do now and were burgled they wouldn't attend in some areas. I think that sends a message that some places are OK to burgle, just don't Jimmy the lock and you can take what you want.

That sounds very likely Julie! I believe that the law should be conducted in the same fashion no matter where you live. If not, then it is making some areas more susceptible to burglary... and burglars aren't stupid!

You are quite right, as I heard a bit about this on the radio this morning Julie.

I'm afraid that, thanks to budget cuts, the police have 'priorities' these days.

I'd be interested to see a complete list of these priorities, but I'm sure that they wouldn't dare to publish such things.

I can guess which would come towards the top, though, bearing in mind that we live in 'the PC Age'!

Re: 999 police ? No you had your window open.

A senior police officer has been criticised for suggesting some burglaries should not be investigated if doors and windows have been left open.

Phil Kay, assistant chief constable of Leicestershire Police, said he would ‘far rather’ officers could focus on preventing crime and protecting the public than spending their time investigating break-ins where carelessness may have played a role.

Well I think the critisism is well deserved.

Hi

A sad state of affairs.

We have only just had to start locking our doors here, it appears we have a sneak thief around.
