A sad end!

On a farm in Central Hawkes Bay is this poignant grave. Edwy Wettenhall, on what would now be consider an "OE" and had been working on local farms until he became ill and died of possibly typhoid fever. The local community looked after him and then arranged his burial and headstone. They contacted his father in Australia but he refused to have anything to do with the cost of burial. to this day the headstone remains on a local farmers property. Lost and alone.

Sorry that's a Kiwi expression. Overseas Experience. Most of us go overseas for at least a couple of years, (my own kids did 10 years in UK and Europe.

What a peaceful and sweet scene.

In the worst of times, people rallied together to take care of Edwy and see to his burial. This is marker is not just a memorial to him but a memorial to the good people of his community.

May we all be sent off with such kindness.

BTW, Ciderman, this land and the rolling landscape looks geographically identical to the Flint Hills of Kansas that I visited just last week.

Thanks Surfermom, that's what I thought too.
As regards the rolling hills, they are limestone mostly and 30 million years ago they were at the bottom of the sea.

Exactly this - at least he was given a final resting place by the good people of the local community. If it was up to his father he would have been forgotten long ago. I'm surprised that his father's name is even on the headstone considering his attitude to his son.

What a lovely peaceful setting, Edwy Wettenhall's special resting place, not lost somewhere in a graveyard..... at rest with nature.

Re: A sad end!

No doubt others have had a much worse end like those killed in the word wars and Holocaust.
