Is it normal for appetite to decrease as I get older?

Hello everyone.

I have achieved a great weightloss by changing my eating habits completely, not only to lose weight but also to get healthier. I am now able to follow my appetite eating as I do and be at my weight.

But I am concerned for the future, after my weight loss eating nutritious food according to my hunger I wouldn't want to gain it all back. So since you apparently need less food as you get older, does appetite decrease also?

any shared experience would be very much appreciated

I think weight loss as one gets older is because one gets less active as one gets older therefore you need less fuel hence you eat less.

I would agree - my current level of inactivity during lockdown has meant that my appetite has diminished, with a noticeable decrease in my weight. In addition, in the past I was aware that many restaurants offered smaller servings (aka pensioner portions). I didn't fully understand why at the time, but now appreciate where they are coming from, especially if you like two courses.

Your metabolism can also slow as you age so less food is required generally. Personally I find that it's no longer being able to be quite so active but still having a good appetite that puts the weight on. Food, of the right type, consumed should equal the activity undertaken, going either side of this will result in either gaining or losing weight. The secret is to find the middle ground.

hi John

You don't say how old you are but at 56, my appetite has not decreased in the slightest. I have lost weight recently but that's because I have been working. there are certain foods I don't fancy such as salad and other rabbit type food but I can still tuck into a big mac and fries.

Since age 65, my appetite has diminished considerably. I do snack a bit more , but I don't pack away my main meal the way I used to. A decade or so back, I could easily consume a 1/2 kilo steak and a baked potato. Now, a 250 gram steak and 1/2 a baked potato is a challenge. After that I fall asleep like a well fed infant.
