We wondered the same at the time also Tiffany...never did find out what lay behind those gates,but it was a seriously creepy and eerie place to be and we didnt hang around once we saw the signs.
Ive never seen any signs like it since or before..."confined spaces"? ,very odd...This photo was taken in the Lake District while on holiday and out walking.

Just googled Black Betty, as the only version I know is from '77 .... Ram Jam

Interestingly it's origins are historic possibly dating back to the 18c. First recorded in the 1930s.
