Re: An extraordinary idea !

No point rubbing anything on it.

If she lost the weight following Slimming World Diets then once she stops she will most likely put the weight back on and more besides. Diets simply do not work. More than 80% (might be higher) of people losing weight via such clubs fail to keep it off once they cease and usually put more weight on.

Large weight loss over a short period (2 mths) is NOT a healthy thing to do. It took years to acquire all that weight, it will take a similar period to permanently lose it again. There is only one proper way to permanently lose weight and that is to properly educate yourself about food and drink types, their ingredients and their merits and impact on the body. Once educated you then simply change your life to eat properly. That's all that is required. The body will do the rest naturally.

Some resources on the fallacy of weight loss clubs:

British Journal Of Nutrition Study

https://www.cambridge.org/core/journ...55BA5650A80A53

"A 2007 study by Weight Watchers, published in the British Journal of Nutrition, looked at the success of their programme over five years. Dr Carl Heneghan, director of the Centre for Evidence-based Medicine at Oxford University, has analysed these figures.

"What it shows is that [after] two years… about 20% of them maintain their goal weight. By five years that goes down to 16%," says Heneghan. "So basically you pick the best people, the lifelong members and actually even they struggle, with the majority of people not obtaining their long-term goal weight"

Re: An extraordinary idea !

People who want to lose weight generally will do as they have the willpower to do so.
Those who need to lose weight usually fail as they do not have the same commitment.
Same goes for exercise - the want outweighs the need.

The core of the problem in, I would say 90%, of the time, is that the aim is completely wrong which your statements confirm.

When a person says:

"I want to lose weight"

They have already placed themselves on the wrong path. Weight is merely a secondary issue, a by-product. That is why most people fail.

The correct desire that needs to be reached is:

"I want to eat good healthy food and drink"

Forget about weight. Simply decide that you want to eat healthily. When you make that decision and the associated changes (education, action) then your body will adjust its weight completely naturally.

It is a similar situation with health in general. The ill-informed person will say:

"I want to get rid of this cold"

and consequently will buy all manner of stupid snake oil pills, potions, lozenges and syrups.

What the person needs to do is ignore the cold and reach the mindset of:

"I want to be a healthy person"

which again, after education and action results in that person eating and drinking healthy things which create a strong immune system so that you don't actually get colds in the first place.

All of this is about mind set and having the epiphany to realise that you just want to be healthy. Slimming Clubs have no vested interested in you reaching that epiphany and that is why they do not properly educate their clients and instead spoon feed them silly diet systems and pre-designed recipes and menus. If they educated people properly there would be no reason for anyone to come back, and that . . . is not a business model that generates $millions.

I have told her all of that, Realist, but she won't listen. This is the same friend I have mentioned before who was using the 'Herbalife' stuff and made herself ill. It hurts me to see a friend so distressed but she will not listen to common sense.

Basically if you want to lose weight you don't eat.
Or do eat but burn up the same calorific intake
There is a reason why skinny marathon runners originate in Ethiopia!
So lock people up for a month with a few carrots to gnaw on and only let them out to run/walk/bike long distances or do hard labour.
The weight will fall off them.

Sorry to hear that.

Everyone has to come to certain life points in their own time. Often however it just needs someone genuine and willing to "say it like it is" in order to ignite the spark of enquiry in someone's mind.

Ah but again this won't be permanent. They body ALWAYS adjusts to the situation.

If you don't eat or drastically reduce intake then the body goes into "starvation mode" believing that food is scarce and thus anything you do actually eat is stored away as fat.
It's a very unhealthy thing to do.

And I wouldn't say that marathon runners are by definition healthy. They are just keeping their bodies in a specific state for that singular purpose. If that purpose changes, if they stop running then things will quickly change.

Again this is why diets never work. Everyone has their own body rhythms and metabolic rates. We just have to decide to eat healthy food. The body will use what it needs and expel the surplus. Eat bad foods and all of the bodies in-built mechanisms go haywire resulting in weight gain and bad health.
