I think.gifts on a first date is an American or Canadian thing it's a shame it never caught on over here.... I think its a lovely idea.

The young man I became engaged to when I was 18 brought me a rose on our first date - he was Canadian.

Other than that - no first date gifts - although - it the first date was a trip to the theatre or cinema - there were often sweets or popcorn to share.

It must be, being Canadian, I don't think I have ever had a first date without a gift. Maybe once or twice. And even once a friend and I were meeting two guys to go to a conference together and at our seats when we sat down, there was a box of specialty chocolates.
