Jumpers ..... ?

I can understand pullovers - even sweaters, but 'jumpers' ..... don't get it

when I think of a jumper I define it as someone who's jumped off a train or a sportsman vaulting, it just doesn't make sense as an item of clothing

Yes I realise that, sorry, it's just that I always say jumpers, always have but I suppose it is a strange word for something you wear.. is it because it's made from wool= sheep=jumping!!l

ETA The hubby calls 'em sweaters or pullovers..

Apparently the word originated from the word Jupe a very old word for a loose knitted garment. Over time it has changed and become Jumper.
