UK's week without coal is first since Industrial Revolution

Saw this yesterday...takes you a while to get your head around it!

"Britain's electricity grid has gone a full week without coal for the first time since the Industrial Revolution.

The new record was set at 1.24pm yesterday, a week after the last generator came off the system"

We import energy, some of which may have been generated by Coal, things are rarely what they seem.

And at the same time coal burning continued unabated in China, India and the USA.

Indeed and all the while we'll keep hearing we're not doing our part to reduce global warming. That message is for other ears who'll not listen imo.

The irony of course is that some coal fired stations such as Drax have been converted to use biomass in the form of wood pellets, but they too emit CO2 when burned.

The pellets are made not only from timber waste materials, but also from swathes of felled forest in America (which uses energy and removes a primary source of CO2 absorbing vegetation), which are then processed in huge factories (using more energy) and then exported over here in huge ships (using yet more energy) and then loaded onto trains and transported to Yorkshire (using even yet more energy) !

And they claim the result of this to be carbon neutral......

Is it just me?

What,s the alternative? Nuclear power?
Do we want another Chernobyl? I dread the thought. How do we dispose of the nuclear waste? .
IMO it,s not safe yet, but probably in years to come when problems have been ironed out. No matter what method we use at the moment, be it wind power, water power etc; it is not enough, To keep industry moving we are still having to rely on the methods we use now in spite of the harmful emissions they produce.

Re: UK's week without coal is first since Industrial Revolution

Let me see if I understand this.

We pay other countries to produce electricity from coal and send it to us. We pay other countries to fell trees and send the wood to us to burn instead of coal.

At the same time, we have millions of tons of coal beneath our feet, unused.

They should make one of those 1950s humorous black and white films based on this because, after all, it is a bit of a joke isn't it?

I wonder what else our glorious leaders can think up.
