Progress will be the death of us all.
I don’t believe in manmade climate change, the climate will do what it has done over the last 4 billion years or so despite our recent attempts to modify its behaviour. Sure, we can do something to make our stay here more comfortable by cutting down the pollution and stop wasting the Earth’s resources, but I believe it’s progress that is pulling us down into oblivion. Somebody invents something useful or labour saving and everyone wants one, before long you can’t do without it, and it becomes a must have and a drain on the earth’s resources, damaging wildlife habitats and destroying the environment with industry....
Take the motor car for example, for thousands of years we managed without them, people worked within walking distance of their home, things were locally produced, and most journeys were done on foot or horseback. In just over one hundred years most people own at least one. Imagine the amount of the Earth’s resources that goes into the manufacture of one. Imagine the amount of pollution caused in the manufacture, and then imagine the amount of pollution it produces in its lifetime of perhaps twenty years, and not all vehicles are recycled, an awful lot of them lie rusting away on waste ground, dumped in waterways, and scrap yards.
Now consider TV’s, Fridges, Freezers, dishwashers, microwaves, computers, smartphones, all inventions of the last hundred years or so, what at first were only afforded by the rich, but now in practically every home and indispensable. Problem is, how do we go backwards? Or at least, how do we stop going forwards? How can we tell the multinational companies to stop inventing useful stuff, or at least be satisfied with what we’ve got?
Anyone got a solution??????
