Bank Scam

I mentioned in another thread about an elderly woman in our village who had been scammed out of £30,000, she is a very astute person, someone who you couldn't have imagined being conned, she has family living in the same house, so not alone.
This is how the scam works.
Someone calls on the phone pretending to be from the Metropolitan Police. They say they have managed to stop a fraudulent transaction on their bank account. In order to keep their money safe the person should move their money to a safe account, to be returned at a later date.
They groom the victim to the extent where they trust no one, family, bank staff etc.
It's happening across the country, two other people in this area were contacted by these people that I'm aware of, so it's still going on.
Be careful.

Re: Bank Scam

It was reported in our local paper last week that four people in Macclesfield had been the target of this scam ... I think they reported it to the police immediately.

They surely must be able to trace them by the account they get people to pay into. I can understand why they can't do it by phone records because they could use pay as you go mobiles and change them, there must be some way to trace them surely.

Re: Bank Scam

People are so gullible.

But this is true...my sister had her mobile phone hacked (I don't understand how) and when she checked her Ebill with Vodaphone she found to her horror she'd been charged £330 for a call she never made!
She called the helpline straight away and had to go into the local branch where they sorted it out. Phew.
It's a Canadian scam apparently.

Tess I thought you said (when you first told me about this off the forum) that "the police" went to her house to collect the money ? Maybe I misunderstood ... ?

Re: Bank Scam

First of all the obvious one from a scammer is not mentioning your name on the top of a letter. If worried ignore any phone numbers mentioned in a letter and look up your local bank/utility company in the telephone directory or on existing bills.

Funnily enough only yesterday I was watching on youtube aboutg scammers ringing up saying your computer had errors/ virus on it and they could fix it by taking over your computer remotely. One I watched the person they were trying to scam was aware and kept the scammer on the phone for a very long time. In the end the scammer started to swear and said somethings I would not repeat on here.

Seeing these videos was quite entertaining actually.

There are many to see in the link below

https://www.youtube.com/results?sear...phone+scammers

Some were funny where the scammers are scammed instead

I love this one its brilliant

An alternative method is to use PAYG only. I only ever top up by £10, so there's never much more than that on my SIM card.

For a low user, like me, PAYG is also cheaper than taking out a contract. I can also recommend Three, with their 3-2-1 PAYG offer.

They transfer it many times through many fake accounts, the more you use the lesser the trail is detectable. Add to this the accounts are offshore and it's almost impossible, think money laundering.

I only have PAYG on my mobile too BJR. I just top up a tenner when I need to. I don't want to be tied to contracts.
