They are all really neat and tidy and many professional people lived in them.

If we are better off ,it is because we worked our socks off with few holidays and did not smoke or drink or fritter away money on whims or high living.

Re: Affordable homes

It seem to me that the homeless and young person who have to wait years to save up enough money for a deposit on a modest home, are not the government's priority.

Over the years The MOD have sold off many Military bases usually in out of Town areas for commercial purposes.
All well and good as they do employ people, however they could have been converted on to little Villages with Shops as many people prefer to live in the countryside.

And... local Councils have been selling of spacious Adult Centres with many fine rooms and grounds to Supermarket Companies.
These too could have been converted to Apartments.
It just is not right..

Multi Millionaires and Billionaires could be more generous and set up Centres for the homeless.
They could be maned by the Tenants like a Hotel with Rules and Restrictions.
If I had the means I would open such a Centre

Re: Affordable homes

If they can’t mange life to such an extent that they are on the street thy would find it hard to manage a house full if tenants .
Few of whom would take any notice of rules and restrictions.

Prefabs take land and it is the land that costs so much that makes building so expensive .

Re: Affordable homes

The best way to provide affordable housing is pay a living wage. In my youth, a single wage earner with a high school degree could keep a family of six in a middle class lifestyle. Now we have two wage earners struggling to pay rent and unable to save any money. What happened to the second wage? The answer is the 1%.

Re: Affordable homes

It is counting the second wage that made houses go up.
When only one wage earner was counted banks would lend 3 and a half times the annual wage .
When two wages were counted more money was loaned and house prices rose accordingly.

Re: Affordable homes

OK, let's just rattle the beads.

Let's take somewhere near work but outside of a city with reasonable commuting. How about - Birkenhead. Three bed end of terrace @ £78,000

Deposit? Say 20% tops. Probably less leaving iro £62,000 to be financed. With a joint monthly income of only 20 grand before tax that mortgage would be like falling off a log.

Mortgage repayments would be about £340 pcm on a 25 year / 3% deal.

If people concentrated on affordability rather than desirability (nowt much wrong with Birkenhead - it's across the river from Liverpool) a very different picture emerges when home ownership is concerned.

No, the best way is to EARN a living wage and if that means getting a second job then that is what needs to be done.

Remember that a person must add value above the costs of employing them. By the time all of the overheads are added in the loaded labour rate often astonishes people.
