Hello Fresh and other meal kit companies

I noticed that this is a growth area in shopping. Having fresh ingredients, prepared, the right quantity of food and recipe cards so that anyone can cook a fresh meal.

I first noticed how popular they are in the USA because of the sheer number of adverts and sponsorship they do for podcasts.

Now they're moving over here. And they are expensive for what you get, I reckon, and beg the question: why did you never learn to cook? They're probably better quality than the average takeaway, but they're not cheap.

I'm not sure about this. We always told we should be living a healthy lifestyle and eat healthy, but this is all good and well for those with a pocket full of cash. The ones who need to eat healthier and change their lifestyle can't afford this. The junk food and ready to go companies pray on the lower income families.

Wow! That was a good rant for a Sunday.

I did a discounted trial fortnight about a year ago

As they couldn't offer pescatarian/Veggie mix I went with the Veggie option.
On the plus side the food was fantastic and everything was included down to even a teaspoon of ground spice or whatever
And a meal for two was more like a meal for 4 so I froze portions once I'd cooked which worked out great value for money in the end

Down sides were having to dispose of all the packaging...which was recyclable but just a lot of it
And for me personally, not having the choice of fish sometimes (which they can offer in the omnivores meals)

Cancellation was easy and they don't quibble or hassle at all
The customer feedback/marketing reply even promised to do all they could about getting fresher and better packaged fish for people like me

You can also choose how many meals a week you want delivered... so 3 a week lasted my daughter and me just about the whole week.

Re: Hello Fresh and other meal kit companies

My grandson and his partner buy these boxes (another company). They both work long hours, with their own business, also live in a village, but love unusual recipes. The reason they opted for this meal planning was simply because they often found they did not have the right spices etc.,in their kitchen cupboard to cook things from books or the internet.

They dont have the boxes very often and do keep the recipe cards to recreate the meals for themselves.

Re: Hello Fresh and other meal kit companies

My son has tried one of them he says it has introduced them to new and interesting menus and he has bought the cook book.

Not for me thanks, I don't want someone picking over my ingredients I like to do the choosing myself.

I imagine the kits are ok for young professionals who just want a bit of this or that and don't have a well stocked store cupboard.

I think you have to have a fair bit of money that you're willing to allocate to food, but I'm glad you had a good experience, Rhian.

Like I said I only did the fortnight As it was half price too!

I agree with Meg in that it's probably aimed towards affluent young professionals with or without children

I agree with Meg too, it's aimed at young professionals who haven't the time/energy/inclination to constantly shop for healthy fresh ingredients, but who don't want to live on a diet of takeaways and junk.

Clever idea and a good money spinner I would think!
