It's a joke, even people in highly dangerous jobs don't earn that.

Fire and police men/women, prison wardens, paramedics, doctors, these are such people who deserve high wages, not some ruddy fella who used to run around a pitch after a spherical object who's job is now to just open his gob.

Take Gary Lineker, he's on £1700,000 a year, essentially for introducing 10 minute highlights of matches that day on MotD. How fecking hard can that be? A bit of reading the autocue and then asking a few basic question to a couple of ex-players before showing the next 10 minutes of highlights.
There are genuinely talented people who do stand out above the rest - rare talents. Andrew Neil for example. He was doing six shows a week, had outstanding knowledge on all issues and interrogated guests better than anyone (sadly after decades, no one seemed to notice).

Compare that to what Lineker does - "good game Alan, what do you think".
