Life without painkillers

Would you be able to function? Do you need to take them in order to perform your job in life?
Or have we become a nation addicted to the need not to tolerate pain ?
Do we pop a couple of pills when there’s really no need ?
What did our ancestors do ?
I don’t recall any of my family taking painkillers regularly .
Only perhaps towards the end of life when an intolerable condition arose .
Will the withdrawal of prescriptions for simple painkillers which can be obtained OTC reduce the amount people take?

Re: Life without painkillers

As a general rule I do not take painkillers. We feel pain for a reason and it needs to be dealt with not masked with drugs.

Due to a recent injury to my foot I reluctantly resorted to having one paracetamol at night to help me to sleep, then it escalated to two per night. Now two don't work - I realised now is the time to stop taking them! Have thrown them out.

Re: Life without painkillers

Similar to Silver Tabby, I rarely take painkillers - in fact come to think of it I can't remember the last time that I did. I must admit to being reasonable healthy - touch wood - and know that some folks have problems that require them to take painkillers to enable them to function properly. Even if I get a headache I don't take anything reasoning that it will eventually go anyway.

I have tried not to take tablets of any sort throughout my life but had to give in when my blood pressure started to soar and the doctor warned me that if I ignored it then I could have a stroke - so it's two pills a day for that, but nothing else.

I take cannabis and believe our ancestors took cannabis. The amount doesn’t increase and I get no nasty side effects like stomach aches that come with pills. In fact quite often doctors prescribe anti inflammatory pills WITH pain killers which destroy the gut lining of stomach. Cannabis doesn’t do this to me. I hate manmade painkillers.

Re: Life without painkillers

I'm taking Paracetamol at the moment following a tooth extraction on Thursday. I'm only taking them sporadically though, just when I feel I need them.

Normally I don't take any, rarely get headaches and the arthritis I have is low level and I cope without them.

When I do use them it's only Paracetamol or Ibuprofen (I'm not supposed to use Ibuprofen due to a stomach acid issue and have to take high doses of Omperazole to counteract the damage the Ibuprofen cause if ever I do take them). I do have some Codeine tablets here (I was prescribed them when I had a previous tooth extraction) but I've never used them.

They do have their place but I do feel they are abused by some people. My ex-boss used to pop Neurofen like they were sweeties and she wouldn't have it when I told her she was addicted and it was the withdrawal that was giving her the headaches.

Nicol I coped the following while researching and yes it seems to prove your point and what I meant about the need to control pain .
While Ibuprofen is not physically or psychologically addictive, a person may become physically dependent in order to maintain their activity level by controlling pain.

There are physical side effects and risks of Ibuprofen use and overdose that can occur without any warning while taking this drug

The more you take, the more you need. I take the absolute minimum.
Distraction works to a degree. If you have something else to think about the pain often becomes something in the background.
