Re: What's on Telly?

I used to love In Loving Memory, the comedy with Thora Hurd - don't see comedies like that any more.

Isn't that the truth and pre-recording devices, remember tutting because programmes clashed so you couldn't watch both! Oh for those times again

That would be top of my comedy list as well Alan (it might tie first place with Only Fools and Horses, not sure yet). Brilliant series and superbly cast.

Well, I'm still going to take a contrary stance. The Vicar of Dibley was amusing, Only fools and horses had moments of brilliance, series with Thora Hird were 'comfy', but none of these pushed the boundries of humour.

When it comes to (IMO) great comedy, let's start with 'TW3', Not the 9 O'clock news, Monty Python and more recently 'Still Game', 'Rab C Nesbitt' etc..

It's a good job you said "IMO" GW, I was going to take issue with you over the "Vicar..........."

TW3, The Frost Report, Frost over England, and its successor programme - Bremner, Bird & Fortune.

Re: What's on Telly?

Of course the 'Vicar of Dibley' had to wait until women were first ordained as priests in the C of E (1994?). By then I was used to women Ministers in the Church of Scotland and the Presbyterian churches in Ireland (1969) so some of the 'impact' had been lost.

Amusingly, the minister who took the memorial service at my mother's funeral in 1993 was the same 'shape & size' as Dawn French - she could have been the prototype for the vicar !!

I remember reading that the character of Geraldine was fashioned (somewhat loosely I would imagine ) on a real female vicar and her life.

Re: What's on Telly?

We still have clashes ! When gardeners world/coronation street/big brother were all on at the same time much debate was had about which should be dropped. Then I discovered the catch up service and peace reined again !
