I think it could be because Mothers in the past used to say " Your not going out with your hair wet " or " you'll catch a cold ". So you were reluctant to do anything or maybe it was just an excuse as he wasn't your type? 
That reminded me of a friend of mine Sue.
I remember her Mum would never let her wash her hair if she had her 'monthlies.' My friend never queried it, she just assumed it must be right.

When I was going out with my missus she was forever washing her hair, the worst thing about that was she asked me into the house and made me wait until it was washed and blow dried, I used to be mortified sitting there waiting with the mother in law giving me bulls looks.
