Re: Merged Facebook threads.

I joined facebook about 5 years ago. Within 3 days of joining my computer was infested - 2 x trojan horses and - even more dangerous - a keylogger !

I cancelled my account and it took my techy friends three days to totally clean my computer.

Re: Merged Facebook threads.

I've never opened a Facebook account but my wife has one that she says is restricted to friends and family. Some of my children and grandchildren have accounts. I don't know about their account settings.

Will the settings work in all cases though? I heard on the News that the trouble can come from a particular App. If one person in a group installs the App, that gives a way in to gather data from others in the group regardless of how they have their settings?

Re: Merged Facebook threads.

Sorry to say, I am a Facebook fan. I belong to many groups. It is for me just a chat app, same as this lot.
I have met a loverly lady my age but she is in the USA. We have been friends for about a year now and we text daily and sent photos. (No porno)
There is no chance of a relationship, and before you say it she is not a scammer.
It is surprising that there are many groups that are interesting. Even I have and contribute to some local to me.

Closed groups don't usually allow you to post third party apps

A messenger group, thats one you may have for real time friends to chat way in, well you have a right numpty of a friend who passes on links and you are even more of a numpty for opening

Its just the same as spam emails, you need to keep your wits about you

Theres many a time Ive clicked a link and the minute it says connect via facebook Im wary If you can change the settings that whatever it is doesn't need access to my friends list I go ahead, if a link won't allow you to block that, Im out of there

Like I said earlier, mine is for real time friends only, people who I know pretty well. The closed groups are nearly all specialists, usually animals and a few local news groups, the PSNI, local tourism, travel watch etc. All that any other member can see of me in those groups is my name. If they click on that, they get a blank page, not even a profile picture

Re: Merged Facebook threads.

I've heard criticisms of Facebook, but have not encountered any real problems myself.

It can be very useful. I have joined a local tradesmen's recommendation group. They do say that the best way to find a good tradesmen is to ask your neighbours.

This, happily, coincides with my cancelling my Which? magazine account.

Re: Merged Facebook threads.

I know being in a group can have its benefits. Our daughter is a member of a neighbourhood group and it's almost like Neighbourhood Watch. She got a message via the group to say that, while away, her vehicle had been broken into. A number of the group turned out to try and make the vehicle safe and weatherproof until her return.

Thanks Missy - Not ever having had an account, I don't really know how Facebook works ..the ins and outs of it and all that. With my family having accounts and photographing and videoing everything, my face is on there to some degree. I haven't been persuaded to open an account myself though.

I have been on Facebook and other sites for many years and, touch wood, have never had a virus of any kind.

You're more likely to be at risk if you don't have a firewall and virus protection. Someone hacked into my account years ago but I bought a new laptop and changed the firewall.

However, it's impossible to have any privacy on there. I always avoid the quizzes as I have long suspected someone is harvesting the data. Free game and other apps do the same. I've removed most social media from.my phone.

Re: Merged Facebook threads.

A lot of people are saying Facebook is taking information from users & passing it to other people, but what I don't understand is what harm is it doing? If it's giving people viruses & other problems. I can see why the fuss, but if it's just taking data for firms & advertisers I really can't see the harm.
I have been on FB for some years, I joined because Family scattered around the World & friends were on it. I do get a lot of different ads from it, that pop up but have never had a problem, people need to sell their goods after all. I can't see it's any different from TV ads & you get nowt for free in this World anyway.
I love the games.
