Re: What Toys did you have as a Child?

I remember having a Popeye soft toy, a rag doll called Myrtle (why Myrtle I donīt know), I always wanted a bike and roller skates but never got either, my mother was terrified I would hurt myself or get killed ! I had various other toys along the way, but my real love was books, mostly about animals and children in Africa and other "exotic" countries. From a very early age I wanted to go to Africa, it took some years but I made it, North Africa, West Africa and East Africa. I still have some of those early books, rather tatty now and stored in a big box, but I have a real problem parting with books.

Of course, when I was a young lad we were so poor we couldn't afford toys.

It's amazing what you can do with a few sticks and bits of rubbish.

Re: What Toys did you have as a Child?

One birthday I asked for a dolls pram. My mum said I didn't have a baby doll to go in it but I said it didn't matter I still wanted one. When it arrived it was a very posh dolls pram with a rain hood and a waterproof cover that went over the blankets. It took me 2 weeks to persuade my pet cat to sleep in that pram and he always loved being taken to the nearby grocer's shop... where he was always offered a piece of cooked meat.

I had a Dolls Pram my Nan's cat called Candy used to go to sleep in it, and I used to dress her up in Dolly clothes and frilly hat and push her around the yard. My Nan also had a Mangle in he yard and I used to wash my dolly clothes and put them through the mangle.

That was certainly true for me, my parents barely had enough money to cover rent and food.
My toys were a couple of wooden spoons and some pan lids.
Someone gave me a kaleidoscope .. I couldn't put it down.

Re: What Toys did you have as a Child?

I was right with the name of jigger. Just asked on a FB page and got positive replies immediately, though they think it was a 'local' name, so may not be well known. I'm sure other areas made them and most probably had their own name for them.

I do remember being on a piece of land once with a neighbouring boy, going down a slopey path and falling off, right into a patch of nettles! Crikey did it hurt!! Mind you, we shouldn't really have been there!
