Rena darlin' until last summer I had a feather mattress topper, feather duvet and feather pillows. Whilst I agree they were tremendously soft, light and warm, they also hoarded dust in them which aggravated my Asthma and I therefore had to dispose of them and purchase anti-allergenic pillows, and duvet and I now also have another mattrfess topper which again is anti-allergenic an d wonderfully soft.

I wonder did grandma have a washing machine or dryer? I bet she didn't. We are soo lucky our mums and grandmums certainly had to work very hard in the home. Plus they had to put up with coal dust and smog. I am not being sexist gents, I know our dads and grandads worked even harder, just looking back as a woman.

Forty years ago when my eldest was just a bairn I used a mangle, it was hard work, boiling his nappies in the baby burco boiler then rinsing them then mangling them before putting them on the line.

And hanging the nappies out at night when it was frosty to keep them nice and white, the terry ones and then those softerones you put on next to the babies skin before the terry ones. We mothers worked hard, no carpets just tiled floors that had to be washed by kneeling down and done by hand, the steps to be scrubbed and the grids to be scrubbed and disinfected, blimey.

No I can't remember a washing machine Cookiecate. Grandma had a copper tub, a washboard and a hand mangle - and washing day was an all day job with the ironing getting done the next day. Of course, today women are working hard; most go out to work and still take care of the house and children. We have all the mod. cons. true and houses are easier to manage, but I am not sure if it is a lot easier, just different - certainly requires organising and juggling.

I quite agree mums do have choices whether to work or not most of our mums had to earn a copper or two as well as keeping house. Remember also dads were dads not like the new man who will actually change a nappy or feed or even be seen pushing a pram.
