Great british rail ??

Sounds like the Tories have re-nationalised the railways at first
sight ?
But not so when you read further !
It seems that what is happening is that the government has only
taken over all the liabilities and financial risks on our behalf, but
are still going to outsource all the day to day management of the
various segments of the rail system?
This will be good as far as having one fare structure and a more
co-ordinated centralised policy overall, but will still give private
companies the opportunity to tender for supplying the management
and the labour to operate the different lines !
I don't see why they don't go the whole hog and take all that back
under gov control as well ??

It's unaffordable to take it back. Remember Jezza threw this out there.

Would have been very interesting if it was decided that the trains would all be free to all users,

Yes, you'll blink there!

If such a system was was put in place, it would do wonders for all those road traffic emissions, the costs of getting to work, etc.

Trouble is, no Government seems able to run a business!

Well, maybe one day!

The problem with all our transport systems is that they are run for profit rather than providing a decent affordable way of getting around the Country and getting to work on time.

Well, they have done it Annie ?
But like l said, they took the liabilities, not the profits ??
So we are stuck with overpaying private operators to do do the nitty
gritty while we pay all the expenses !!
On the affordability, you forget that Boris is in charge now !!

Re: Great british rail ??

I remember using the BR when it was govt owned - the only decent service was first class the rest was crap - what has changed - why can't the brits run a service equitable to ECCU or Japan?

I remember using it 70 years ago and it was crap then!!

From my armchair it seems that Scotrail is one of the few companies that run a decent service (I may be wrong of course) but from what I have seen, the employees take a great pride in their railway.

thank god they are semi-independent then - remember we had the greatest rail engineers in the world and we still produced second hand?
