That sounds about right, Baz.
They aren't all bad though. There were several from the same family on land near here. They took over a council yard where the council stored grit etc, it was a big yard concreted with a wall all around it, surrounded by fields, no house near.
I used to pass the area regularly on the bus, so I saw what was happening, but don't know the whole story.
The council had discussions with them & the land owner & the outcome was they were allowed to stay until their youngest child was grown up & left school.
They had bins & the council emptied those, a letterbox beside the gates in & even a bus stopped there so the kids could go to a local school.
The farmer let them have a field beside the yard & they kept chickens & other animals & a couple of ponies. I don't know if rent was paid though..
After 20 years or so, all the kids grew up & they did move out. The council have got the yard back & are using it again & the farmer has his field.
When they left they didn't leave a mess & they cleared the site. So not all are bad uns, just most of them.
