Polish Food

I've never been to Poland, but I'm liking their food products on sale here in London more & more. You could argue I'm getting disillusioned with general standards, run of the mill nothingness on offer at our homegrown brand of supermarket.

Today we bought four items at www.mleczkodelikatesy.com

A tube of fish paste. 90p yum
What my mother used to make and call Russian Salad ... most delicious, freshly made, big pot for 99p
A loaf of bread, sliced, wrapped in a plastic ... but why can't UK supermarkets provide this multi grain with seeds that is bread and not cotton wool? 89p
A big lump of fresh pork, their translation is "Collar", I'd call it "Neckend of Loin". I roasted it tonight (1hr 45m) and it's the best pork I've tasted in 15 years, since leaving Portugal. £8, enough for 10 meals.
Service with a smile.

Proper nosh ... why is it so difficult to find? We have upmarket butchers/delis, 2 or 3 times the price but still rubbish by comparison.

Do you have any favourite alternatives to Tesco, Sainsbury, Asda etc? ... (we deserve better)

Re: Polish Food

I love Polish food - but don't have access to any during this lock down as all the Polish shops are in the town. However - the newest family in the street have been providing treats. He is Italian and works as a chef, she is from Georgia (no, not the american one) and loves to cook. I often hear a knock at the door - and find a well wrapped dish of something tasty on the doorstep! It was cake last time - and was layers of gorgeousness topped with cream!

Re: Polish Food

I can't say I have much experience cooking Polish foods but I do love golabki (stuffed cabbage rolls)

Oh Yes - I love those!

Made some more of your special potato salad yesterday, Bakerman, to go with a bacon/egg quiche. Very tasty.

Sounds yummy. Especially if the crust is super light and flakey. My favorite quiche is quiche Lorraine. Only problem is most of the markets near me don't carry gruyere cheese. I can get it but it means traveling quite a bit further.

I rarely polish my food though I do sometimes give it a wipe over with a damp cloth.

Re: Polish Food

I'm not sure most people realise that pickled herring is raw fish.

A lot of the cuisine is similar to other Baltic regions where the winter is long and much had to be pickled, smoked or fermented. If you go to Denmark the diet is similar. Ikea used to sell the same foods. Breads that last more than just a few days, decent coffee, flavoured spirits and a range of herring. What more do you need to survive the icy wastes?

Rollmops ... delish

IKEA ... worth visiting just for their dill sauce and other condiments https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/cat/sauce...diments-25216/
