Do older people lose their sense of humour?

As you get older do you lose your sense of humour?
What used to be funny do you now find offensive or childish?
Have your turned into a Victor Meldrew type of character?

I've noticed some of my older friends have become grumpy old fogeys, gone is the mischief, the glint in their eyes etc.
I hope I never get like this, I pride myself on my humour, the ability to laugh, a little bit of self deprecation when needed.

My kids often say I'm not like their friends dads, that I'm fun and a bit immature at times and they like it that way. I'm quite proud that my kids can enjoy my company and have a laugh with their dad.

Maybe the environment/industry in which I work doesn't allow me to mature gracefully?
Maybe I don't want to?

My dear old Gran died at the age of 95, her humour was legendary amongst my friends, I really did have some great, great laughs with her, she could be very cheeky with it too.
I think I must have inherited her genes, thank God.

I think there is a risk that the grumpiness trumps any previous humour. Perhaps with good reason, like pain or loneliness but I think the real oldies should take care not to become too self-centered and inwards looking. .. like recycled toddlers

Depends if something is really funny .
Maggie Smith in Downton is funny because of her dry witty humour
Cheeky is ok as long as its light and amusing .
Cumbersome flirtatiousness is just tedious.

Agree with that

Don't see why we should 'lose' our sense of humour, I have 'always' laughed at the same things, why would I change ..............

I think its good to keep a sense of humour however old you get ,what I dont like seeing though is older folks "trying" too hard to be funny all the time ,that to me is a sure sign of old fogeyness...you just cant force funnyness and for some one to claim to be a recycled teenager oh puleaseeeee just STOP it!!!! its so dated to say that just BE yourselves not some buffoon trying to be funny

Especially as teenagers often have no sense of humour and are moody and disagreeable .

Re: Do older people lose their sense of humour?

Many older people I have known, have become self-centred and leg pulling of wisecracking is out of their orbit. I have always made jokes against myself, not as a standard practice, but merely spontaneously.

Rib-bursting laughter makes you forget all the negatives in life, if only for a moment or two....
