My mum had one of those mushrooms. I haven't darned socks in years, probably not since the early 70's when we were so broke but then later clothes generally became so much more affordable. In fact I chucked a pair only yesterday, holes in both heels. I also remember before the days of duvets turning sheets that had worn thin, sides to middle, and then they were never quite wide enought for the bed, so annoying!

I used to darn socks many years ago, in fact I was a dab hand with my mushroom!

These days holey socks are discarded.

My Gran used to take the two worn sheets & cut out the worn bits & sew the two good bits together to make another sheet. The worn bits were used as dusters or dish cloths.
