Rail Company Being Re-Nationalised?

It's the subject of the usual debates with all of the usual reasons.

However, we shouldn't lose sight of the fact that re-nationalising a single rail company,( for a short period?) might allow the left and right to bottom out some hypotheses.

Labour were preaching the gospel, about Nationalisation being the way to go.

What a great chance to demonstrate whether the public will be better or worse off.

Tactically the Labourites would have to be very very careful to have no late trains, no strikes, and high quality rolling stock. (and keep the ticket prices low!).If they can't achieve that, even their own supporters will see them for what they are.

Maybe they will get the unions, etc., on board to make sure they create a good image?

The Tories, will have to face up to giving value for money for all of those other over priced, badly run, failing train companies - which don't give a stuff about customer satisfaction. They won't want to let Labour get better marks (no pun).

Bring it on!

Let's watch the battle. Which is best? Nationalised or Private.

Yes, it will be interesting to see how it performs. I bet old Corbyn is kicking himself.

Re: Rail Company Being Re-Nationalised?

Arriva was taken over in 2010 by Deutsche Bahn, a German company. Now I read recently that Arriva passenger train and bus was up for sale. It was put on hold in Autumn /November time .
So maybe it's a poke in the eye for Deutsche Bahn, and the beginning of grabbing back what once belonged to us ?

I don't really understand the implications of 'Nationalisation' - but it does seem a bit silly to do it piece meal and why only 'for a short period'? Wouldn't all or nothing be better?

Re: Rail Company Being Re-Nationalised?

Our railways were privatised in , I think the 1970's! Everything went down hill as they scrapped lines that did not make a fat profit. The lack of rail transport for freight put about 6000 more heavy trucks on the roads, which resulted in high maintenance costs - higher than the rail links would have been by a big margin.
The Govt eventually realised the folly of this and it was repurchased. It now doesn't have too make a profit- just break even.

Re: Rail Company Being Re-Nationalised?

We should privatise the whole lot, that's been the problem.

Here are some questions for all the people who support Labours manifesto in re-nationalising the railways ... let's see the solutions.

After re-nationalisation :

Question 1 : Who exactly will maintain the railways ?

Question 2 " Who exactly will operate the rail services (anything from bookings to driving the trains).

Question 3 : Who exactly will support these services (such as IT provisioning, training etc)

Network Rail is state owned, the operators do not currently maintain the network

A new British Rail

Question 3 : Who exactly will support these services (such as IT provisioning, training etc)

Network Rail and the new British Rail using staff from the current operators

Re: Rail Company Being Re-Nationalised?

Things oop north won't improve with short term nationalisation because the lack of modern rolling stock will take months to come "on stream". Even then the lack of electification on the tracks will mean the Greens will have a field day because of the diesel exhaust fumes polluting the atmosphere. As for overcrowding on trains, this can only be solved, imho, by putting more carriages on each train at times of need but this could mean that certain stations might have to have their platforms extended.

Exactly the same can be said for rail users in the West Midlands.

So we buy it back and then subcontractor it back to the same people in the private sector ?
