Revenue

After raising the question of revenue collection on electric vehicles, five years on, it has been mentioned on the Tele for the first time today.

Re: Revenue

All cars tracked by satellite? revenue lifted straight from owners bank accounts?

I wouldn't put it past them.

Get the app.

Basically what d00d said, the motoring journalist reckons Satellite Technology will track your car and raise a charge () based on the mileage completed. I still think it is more likely that Smart Meters will communicate with a device within the car during charging via the charging process, the energy used being billed along with normal household usage at a pre-determined tariff.

Re: Revenue

I don't have an EV, don't know much about them, but there are quite a few around here getting topped up at charging points in the street or car parks ... free of charge.

At the moment, there will be a commercial (or series of commercial) operations running these sites.

Re: Revenue

It’s already here, some Mercedes have systems in place to monitor the car, how it’s been driven ect, which can be accessed by dealers to see if it’s been abused for any warranty claims, Mazda also has this although they say it’s not activated, cars are just computers on wheels so it’s not too difficult for these systems to be used

No prizes for guessing which charging method will be the most extortionate.

There are three main types of EV charging – rapid, fast, and slow. These represent the power outputs, and therefore charging speeds, available to charge an EV. Note that power is measured in kilowatts (kW).

Rapid chargers are the fastest way to charge an EV, and predominantly cover DC charging. This can be split into two categories – ultra-rapid and rapid. Ultra-rapid points can charge at 100+ kW – often 150 kW – and up to 350 kW, and are DC only. Conventional rapid points make up the majority of the UK’s rapid charging infrastructure and charge at 50 kW DC, with 43 kW AC rapid charging often also available.

Fast chargers
include those which provide power from 7 kW to 22 kW, which typically fully charge an EV in 3-4 hours. The most common public charge point found in the UK is a 7 kW untethered Type 2 inlet, though tethered connectors are available too for both Type 1 and type 2.

Slow units (up to 3 kW) are best used for overnight charging and usually take between 6 and 12 hours for a pure-EV, or 2-4 hours for a PHEV. EVs charge on slow devices using a cable which connects the vehicle to a 3-pin or Type 2 socket.

Car charging is free but not for long!

I don't know how much it costs to charge a car but I imagine not a lot. We are gonna have to pay serious money to make up for the duty and vat we are currently paying at gas stations. We are talking the majority of what it costs to fill her up.
