What a bloody noise

It`s my old steam powered computer. The fan is working over time despite my hoovering it.

Solution? Get out the trusty debit card and buy a lap top. I`ve never owned one before but I`m told I must get out of the 20th century.

It you remove the fan from the processor's heat sink? It usually makes a big difference.

Re: What a bloody noise

I dislike laptops.
I have OH's old Mac one but never use it.

Most of the time I use this iPad (bought as an interim measure when the iMac's hard drive went).
Thought I'd hate it but would not want to be without it now.

There are plenty of refurbished computers on ebay if you don't want to spend too much dosh.

A quick shot of WD40, direct to the fan's bearings, would probably give it a new lease of life.(done when the fan is off the machine).

We're not so used to all this hot weather...switch off when not in use.

I don't dislike laptops but my preferred machine is my desktop; bigger screen, proper keyboard, more usb ports, better sound system and, best of all, faster.

When I bought the iPad, I couldn't imagine poking it with a finger, so I also bought a keyboard ... and have never used it.

I use a tablet too, I am using a 9" Samsung TAB A to write this. Again I prefer my desktop but for portability a tablet is handy around the house.

When I travel I have a couple of laptops - a 14" Lenovo ThinkPad for when I travel in Australia and a 10" Lenovo netbook with an SSD and pointless touch screen that I use when travelling overseas.

Apart from those I have a couple of old Dell laptops: one a 14" Dell running Ubuntu (ex Vista) which I keep for visitors. It has Teamviewer installed for one regular overseas visitor who needs to be able to run her business while here plus the usual software like Firefox and LibreOffice for the others. The other, a 10" Dell netbook, is too slow to be of any use - it originally ran XP but Ubuntu runs like a wet weekend - I suppose eventually it will go in the bin.
