Felicity Huffman to be sentenced in college admissions bribery scandal case

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...y-scandal-case

The Desperate Housewives and Transamerica star actor is scheduled to appear in Boston’s federal court after pleading guilty in May to a single count of conspiracy and fraud.

She’s the first parent to be sentenced among 34 charged in the widespread US scheme involving wealthy parents and elite universities.

Huffman has admitted paying $15,000 to boost her older daughter’s SAT scores in 2017 with the help of William “Rick” Singer, an admission consultant at the center of the scheme.

Prosecutors say Huffman’s daughter was unaware of the arrangement.

They have recommended a month in prison for the actor, along with supervised release and a $20,000 fine. Huffman’s lawyers say she should get a year of probation, 250 hours of community service and a $20,000 fine.

The case is seen as an indicator of what’s to come for others charged in the case. Over the next two months, nearly a dozen other parents are scheduled to be sentenced after pleading guilty. A total of 15 parents have pleaded guilty, while 19 are fighting the charges.

The amount Huffman paid is relatively low compared to other alleged bribes. Some parents are accused of paying up to $500,000 to get their children into elite schools by having them labeled as recruited athletes for sports they didn’t even play.

US actress Felicity Huffman has been sentenced to 14 days in prison for her involvement in a college admissions scandal.

The Desperate Housewives star admitted to paying $15,000 (£11,500) to have her daughter's exam answers secretly corrected in 2017.

She must also do 250 hours of community service and pay a $30,000 fine.

"There are no excuses or justifications for my actions. Period," Huffman said in a statement after her sentencing. "I would like to apologise again to my daughter, my husband, my family and the educational community for my actions.

"And I especially want to apologise to the students who work hard every day to get into college, and to their parents who make tremendous sacrifices supporting their children."

She must report to prison in six weeks.
Given the limited extent of Huffman's crime and the sentence imposed, what penalty can those parents who spent millions of dollars to "bend" the US education system expect .....

Perhaps their millions of dollars will "bend" the US judicial system, too .....

What punishment has been meted out to those who took the bribe and changed her daughter's test results?

Cases are still ongoing against named "perps", including parents and university administrators. Additionally, there are civil suits pending and investigations continuing.

11 universities, their associated athletic programs, and 11 university personnel are involved in the case:

William Rick Singer, organizer of the scheme, who used part of the money to fraudulently inflate entrance exam test scores and bribe college officials controlled the two firms involved in the scheme, Key Worldwide Foundation and The Edge College & Career Network (also known as "The Key"). He pled guilty and cooperated with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in gathering incriminating evidence against co-conspirators. He said he unethically facilitated college admission for children in more than 750 families. Singer faces up to 65 years in prison, and a fine of $1.25 million.

Felicity Huffman begins 14-day jail term for cheating scam

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-50061120
The Desperate Housewives star turned herself in at a federal prison in Dublin, California - 40 miles (65km) east of San Francisco - on Tuesday.

US district Judge Indira Talwani had given Huffman until 25 October to report to prison. She had requested to be jailed near her family - including her Oscar winning actor-husband William H Macy - in California.

"Ms Huffman is prepared to serve the term of imprisonment Judge Talwani ordered as one part of the punishment she imposed for Ms Huffman's actions," a representative for the actress said in a statement.

"She will begin serving the remainder of the sentence Judge Talwani imposed - one year of supervised release, with conditions including 250 hours of community service - when she is released."

Lori Loughlin, US actress, jailed over college admissions scandal

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-53871023

She has been sentenced to two months in prison for her part in a US college admissions scam. Her husband, Mossimo Giannulli, was handed a five-month prison term.

In May, the couple admitted to taking part in a fraud scheme designed to ensure spots for their daughters at the University of Southern California as fake athletic recruits.

A federal judge accepted a plea deal before sentencing the star. The plea deal requires Loughlin to pay a $150,000 (£112,000) fine and complete 100 hours of community service. Fashion designer Giannulli must pay a $250,000 fine and complete 250 hours of community service.

Loughlin and Giannulli initially rejected a plea deal and pleaded not guilty. Prosecutors in Massachusetts had publicly warned Loughlin that the longer her case dragged on, the longer her sentence would be if she was eventually convicted at trial rather than entering a guilty plea.

In May, Loughlin pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire and mail fraud in a court in Massachusetts. Giannulli pleaded guilty to the same charges, plus a further count of honest services wire and mail fraud.
It doesn't seem much of a punishment but it's roughly in line with that which Felicity Hoffman received. In Loughlin's case, she was also dropped by her employers, Hallmark Channel, Netflix and technology firm Hewlett-Packard.

Operation Varsity: How the rich and famous cheated the US university system

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-56427793

Chris Smith, the film-maker behind movies including Netflix's Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened, as well as the hit series Tiger King, has now made the docudrama Operation Varsity Blues: The College Admissions Scandal.

Dozens of wealthy Americans, including actresses Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin, were jailed after the cheating was exposed by the FBI, with many parents paying huge sums to get their children into the country's elite universities.

The scam was masterminded by Rick Singer, an education expert who used part of the money to fraudulently inflate entrance exam results and to bribe officials.

"I think as far as some of those parents were concerned, this is how it works in the USA," says Smith. "They're familiar with the idea that if you're wealthy and connected, a whole different system of rules apply."

The programme is partly dramatised, with Stranger Things actor Matthew Modine taking the part of Singer, along with other actors playing parents and college coaches.

Smith agrees that the pressure on some young people to get into an elite establishment is immense - for social as well as academic reasons.

"I think one of the things we're hoping to get across in this film, and this came from a lot of education experts, is that you don't have to go to a top college, you can get a great education at any number of colleges," he explains. "But by going to a particularly great school, you're going to be put with a group of people who are already connected, already wealthy and already privileged. So, it perpetuates a system of disparity."
That's life, sadly ..... ..... but exposing the criminality of system is welcome .....
