Car Improvements

Spent the day fitting an awning to the side of the car. Should be good in summer. A bit of drilling, pop riveting and bolting.

It is basically just a 1.8m piece of square ali (for rigidity) with a C section ali pop riveted to it.

It is bolted to the roof bars. That is how it is driving along however when you stop...

...then you slide a tarp into the slot...

...and erect a couple of poles to hold it up

It only takes a few minutes and you have a shady spot.

Yes, you do need the shade that is for sure. I shall mainly use it when I am using my tent - ie if I don't take my camper trailer with me I usually travel with a 3m square gazebo which takes about 10 minutes to put up by myself but it takes up unnecessary room in the back - this is just a small roll and probably takes about 5 minutes to set up.

I am thinking of going back to tent camping for some trips because one of the most frustrating things about towing is the inability to turn round on narrow roads if you see something as you drive by and the difficulty of parking in the centre of small towns. That means everything has to be carried in the car.

As for my plants - it is winter and one of the coldest winters for ages. - Day time temps are fine but night time it has dropped to near 0°C at night several times this year. Normally a temperature we see once perhaps once in a decade. However the Frangipani trees are always bare at this time of the year.

Re: Car Improvements

Actually for all my clever planning, measuring etc I fell foul of the hurricane proof garage door.

There appeared to be plenty of clearance for the garage door.

But when I tried to close the garage door the bar hit a door strut.

So I moved the car over a few inches but it still hit the door

Now after nearly 40 years I have to reverse the car into the garage

Huuumph!
